Key Message on World Hypertension day

  • Hypertension may often be preventable and remains a constant threat to well being.

  • There are effective policies that could facilitate people making healthy choices which if implemented could largely prevent hypertension from occurring.

  • Hypertension is easy to screen but only about 50% of adults are aware of their condition.

  • Effective lifestyle and drug treatments are available that could control hypertension in most individuals.

Blood pressure is the pressure of blood in the circulatory system. It is often measured as diagnositic tool as it is closely related to the force and rate of heartbeat and the diameter and elasticity of the arterial walls. This is usually 120mmHg/80mmHg. Anything over this is Hypertension

The fact sheet  of hypertension shows that it is rapidly spreading almost epidemic in nature.  The scale of hypertension is:

120 / 80 mmHg is normal.

121 -129 / 80mmHg is elevated  blood pressure.

130-139/ 80-89 mmHg is stage 1 hypertension.

140 at least/at least 90mmHg is stage 2 hypertension.

↑180 /↑120 is crisis just check into the nearest hospital.

Causes of hypertension:

Is not really known though the increased in prevelance is attributed to increased use in processed food. Chronic renal disorders, some underlying disorder or stress, adverse effect of medication could all be responsible.

The risk factors  are:

  • Age
  • Ethenicity
  • Size and weight.
  • Alcohol and tobacco users
  • Men at higher risk than women.
  • Underlying health issues.

Unmanaged hypertension can lead to heart failure, aneurysm, kidney failure, stroke or retinopathy.

Since hypertension is a lifestyle disease it should be managed. By:

  • Decreased salt.
  • Diet counselling

Metaphysically speaking  blood circulation is about movement of life energy and nourishment within the human body. When there is an increased pressure it indicates, anger, stress, feelings not being expressed creating an inner pressure.
